Our Story

If you've landed here looking for a hoodie, t-shirt, or a coffee mug, you might wonder why this store talks so much about veterinary wellness, ethics, and mental health. Well... GRIT + LOVE was never meant to be just another apparel brand or t-shirt shop.

It began with one question: How do we create something that supports the people who dedicate their lives to caring for everyone else?

The Story Behind the Concept

For more than 24 years, I have worked as a veterinarian.  Prior to becoming a veterinarian, I worked as a kennel assistant and veterinary technician assistant.  During my time in vet med, I have watched extraordinary people show up every day for animals, clients, coworkers, and their communities.  Veterinary professionals solve difficult medical problems, guide families through heartbreaking decisions, celebrate recoveries, and carry an emotional load that often goes unnoticed outside the profession.

The public usually sees the joyful moments.  What they don't always see are the extremely long hours without a break, the late emergency calls, the challenging financial pressures, the moral dilemmas, and the weight of making life-changing decisions every single day.

Veterinary medicine asks a great deal of the people who choose it.  For years, the conversation around burnout focused on individual resilience... leaders encouraging people to work harder, practice more self-care, and find better balance.  But simply telling people who may be burning out to do these things isn't enough.  Burnout is not simply an individual problem; it is an occupational risk and challenge to all those involved in vet med.

Just as we recognize radiation safety, infection control, and ergonomics as essential parts of a healthy workplace, psychological safety and mental well-being deserve the same attention.  Healthy teams need to be built intentionally with thorough supportive leadership, respectful and consistent communication, ethical decision-making, and workplace cultures where people can ask for help without fear.

What GRIT + LOVE Means

That belief/concept became the foundation for this idea/brand:

"GRIT" represents perseverance, accountability, boundary establishment, and the courage to keep moving through difficult situations.

"LOVE" represents empathy, curiosity, kindness, belonging, and the recognition that people do their best work when they know they matter to those around them.

Neither is enough on its own. Grit without love can become exhaustion. Love without grit can lose direction when challenges arise. Together, they create something stronger.

What Your Purchase Supports

This store exists to help spread that message beyond conference rooms and classrooms. Many designs are intended to start conversations about wellness, ethics, leadership, inclusion, and the human side of veterinary medicine.  Sometimes that conversation can begin simply with a T-shirt.  Sometimes it begins with a sticker on a laptop or a coffee mug sitting in a break room.  I know that might sound a bit vague, but putting this concept and some of these designs out into the wild have sparked conversations, laughter, and even optimism.

Every purchase also supports a broader mission.  Proceeds help advance veterinary mental health awareness and ethics education through projects designed to strengthen the profession and the people within it.  We are currently donating a portion of our proceeds to support the nonprofit organization the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics (SVME) in its mission to promote veterinary ethics education & to create a safe and open forum in which to have engaging discussion and serious debate.

If you're a veterinarian, technician, assistant, CSR, student, practice manager, or simply someone who believes that caring professions deserve caring workplaces... we're glad you're here. This isn't just a store; we are building a community built on the belief that we can create a profession where people continue to do extraordinary work without sacrificing themselves in the process.

Welcome to GRIT + LOVE.  Thank you for being here.  You belong.
